Attending the Hospice UK Fundraising Leaders Conference last week was an inspiring and enriching experience. The event underscored the compassion and collaborative spirit that define those working in hospices across the UK. It was a gathering of dedicated professionals committed to sharing insights and strategies to enhance their fundraising efforts, all within a friendly and supportive atmosphere. I was invited by Engaging Networks to present with them and our mutual clients at Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care.
The Heart of Hospice Care – Culture Change and Collaboration
One of the primary themes of the conference was managing culture change. In the fast-evolving landscape of healthcare and fundraising, adapting to new cultural norms and operational strategies is crucial. Sessions throughout the conference highlighted the importance of fostering a positive and adaptable culture within hospice organisations. This cultural shift is not just about embracing new technologies or methodologies, but also about creating an environment where every team member feels valued and empowered to contribute to the organisation’s mission.
Collaboration emerged as another central theme. The discussions emphasized the value of working together, both within individual organizations and across the entire sector. Sharing resources, knowledge, and best practices can lead to more innovative solutions and ultimately better outcomes for patients and their families. The commitment to breaking down silos and building stronger, more cooperative networks was truly inspiring.
Retention and Data Reporting – Key Takeaways from Our Presentation
During the conference, I had the privilege of presenting alongside Engaging Networks and Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care on the critical topics of retention, data, and reporting. Our session focused on how data-driven strategies can significantly enhance donor retention; a vital component for the sustainability of hospice fundraising efforts.
We emphasized the importance of understanding donor behaviour through comprehensive data analysis. By leveraging data, hospices can tailor their engagement strategies to meet the specific needs and preferences of their supporters, leading to more meaningful and lasting relationships. This approach not only helps in retaining donors but also in identifying potential areas for growth and improvement. There was also the mention that supporters of hospices are not the classic cash pinata that you can keep hitting up; it needs to be a relationship of mutual respect and understanding.
Case Study: Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care’s Reconsenting Campaign
A highlight of our presentation was the case study from Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care. They shared their experience with a reconsenting campaign, demonstrating the power of data and effective communication. Following the merger of Rennie Grove and Peace Hospices, they faced the challenge of reconsenting their combined supporter base. Their approach was phased and data-driven, yielding significant insights and results.
The campaign began with pre-merger outreach, followed by regular reminders in monthly e-newsletters. Despite challenges such as drop-offs in the two-step reconsent process, Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care achieved remarkable improvements by simplifying the process and employing nudge theory tactics. For example, they found that adding a text consent link improved the reconsent rate, addressing potential technical issues with the original process.
By the final push, they had streamlined the process to a one-step button click, resulting in a 20% reconsent rate among those who opened the email. Their persistence and willingness to adapt their approach led to a total of 6,840 reconsents, with significant improvements in click and open rates. The key takeaways from their campaign included the importance of simplifying processes for end-users, segmenting audiences effectively, and continuously testing and optimising strategies.
Addressing KPIs and Target Setting – A Crucial Discussion
During our session, the only question posed to me was about KPIs and setting targets. This is a crucial area where data plays a pivotal role. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are essential for measuring the effectiveness of fundraising activities and ensuring that organisations stay on track to meet their goals. However, setting the right KPIs requires a deep understanding of the data.
We explained that KPIs should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). They should align with the overall objectives of the organisation and be regularly reviewed and adjusted based on insights gained from data analysis. For instance, tracking metrics such as donor retention rates, average donation amounts, and donor engagement levels can provide a clear picture of how well a hospice is performing and where improvements are needed. Think clearly about which metrics will affect change in your supporter processes and engagement.
The Power of Data in Fundraising
Data is the backbone of modern fundraising strategies. It allows organisations to move beyond guesswork and make evidence-based decisions. By analysing data, hospices can identify patterns and trends that might not be immediately apparent, allowing them to optimise their efforts and maximise their impact.
At Actually Data Analytics, we specialise in providing the tools and expertise needed to harness the power of data. Our solutions are designed to help hospices streamline their reporting processes, gain deeper insights into their performance, and ultimately improve their fundraising outcomes. We believe that with the right data and the right tools, hospice organisations can achieve remarkable results.
Practical Steps for Enhancing Retention
Based on the discussions and presentations at the conference, here are some practical steps hospices can take to enhance donor retention:
- Develop a Comprehensive Strategy: Retention should be integrated into the overall supporter experience strategy. This involves planning how to keep supporters engaged from the moment they are acquired.
- Foster Organisational Cohesion: Encourage collaboration between different departments such as nursing, volunteering, and fundraising to ensure a unified approach to supporter engagement.
- Personalise Engagement: Use data to understand what matters to your supporters and tailor your communication and engagement strategies accordingly. Personalisation can significantly enhance the supporter experience.
- Leverage Effective Reporting Tools: Accurate and timely reporting is essential for tracking performance and making informed decisions. Invest in robust reporting tools that provide actionable insights.
- Set and Review KPIs: Establish SMART KPIs that align with your organisational goals and regularly review them based on data insights. This helps ensure that you stay on track and make necessary adjustments.
- Simplify Processes: Make it easy for supporters to engage with your campaigns. Simplifying processes can lead to higher engagement and retention rates.
- Test and Optimize: Continuously test different approaches and optimize based on what works best. This involves tracking, learning, and repeating the process to achieve better results.
